June 14, 2019
I spent the day at Terrace View Gardens, our 82 bed – four-star nursing home in Cincinnati, Ohio. Sandy Campbell is the administrator there and has developed an absolutely incredible team of caregivers over the years. One of those caregivers is Shana Benson.

Shana is 42 and became an STNA in 1997 and has been at Terrace View since 2007. She became an STNA because her best friend was doing it and really enjoyed it. Shana said I really wanted to help people and have always enjoyed older people, so I thought it was a perfect fit. Let me tell you it was!

Shana's love and compassion for her residents are unmatched. She took me and introduced me to all of her residents and told me a little about each one of them. Later in the day, she took me to the other units in the building and introduced me to residents and told me a little about them as well. When we turned a corner on one of the units, she told me the hardest thing is when you become close to them, you start to see them declining, and then you lose them, "It hurts so bad." You could see the love in her eyes, for those she cares for. Shana is everything good about a caregiver.

We had lunch with the other staff, we laughed, joked, and at one point, Shana looked at me and smiled, "We are family here." My heart melted and I smiled back, "We sure are."

At one point we sat down so that Shana could do her documentation and we had another moment to chat. I asked Shana who in her life do she look up to? Who has had a significant influence and impact? Shana thought for a second and said, "My son." I had never had anyone say that to me, so I asked her to explain. Shana said, "I was a wild child growing up and got into a lot of things. My son has always been good and has never given me an ounce of trouble and has never been sick. When he was a boy, I was concerned that he didn't have any friend and was pretty much a loner and told him to go out and hang out with the other kids. One day David looked at me and said, 'Mom, they all do drugs and smoke, and I'm not about that." Shana said, "I have always loved my son, but at that moment, I had a new respect and admiration for him. I never mentioned to him again about going out and hanging out with anyone." David is 26 years old today, thriving, and Shana couldn't be any prouder of him.

I gave birth to you but you came with no instructions.

All I knew was that I loved you long before I saw you.

I know I made some mistakes and for that I am sorry,

But I was doing the best I could with what I knew,

Everything I did for you, I did from love.

You are my child, my life, my dreams for tomorrow.

I will always LOVE you and there is nothing that could ever destroy my love for you.

Shana – You are an amazing woman and we are so fortunate to have a mom and caregiver like you taking care of our residents. I loved every minute of my time with you and the family at Terrace View.
