From L to R: Bob Speelman, Akira Palmer

June 29, 2022
I had an amazing day today with a young lady by the name of Akira Palmer. Akira has been a Nursing Assistant for only 1 year and 1 month and is 21 years old. If you only spend just a few minutes with Akira you instantly know this is what she is suppose to be doing. Akira works at Meadow Grove Transitional Care our Nursing Center located in Grove City, Ohio. She is full of joy and compassion and her residents and their families adore her. Akira took so quickly to caring for her residents that she was soon promoted to a Nursing Assistant Mentor.

I asked Akira what she did before she became a Nursing Assistant and she told me, “I worked at a FedEx warehouse.” I said, “Really?” I just was surprised because you can tell immediately that she is cut out to be a caregiver. Akira told me that she wasn’t fulfilled working there and knew in her heart she wanted to do something more meaning and impactful. Her dad was dating a Nurse from Meadow Grove and she suggested she look into becoming a Nursing Assistant. That is exactly what Akira did and soon enrolled in the classes.

The first day of class the instructor pulled out a bed pan and explained about assisting a resident to toilet. Akira was not expecting this but quickly realized she confused being a Medical Assistant who just took vitals and helped the Nurses in a Doctors Office. Akira said to herself, “Oh well, I’m here, I might as well give this a shot.” I’m so glad she did!

I asked Akira if she is surprised that she’s such a natural at being a Nursing Assistant. She told me, “Not really. My mother passed away when I was 11 years old and before she passed, she spent some time at a Nursing Facility. This facility wasn’t anything like Meadow Grove and I didn’t think she received the best care. I want to give my residents the care I wished my mother received.

Akira also told me that even though her Dad raised her it was with the help of her Grandma and her Great Granda and she felt like the time she spent with them and the love she has for them helped her be very comfortable in caring for Seniors.

I asked Akira who the most influential person is or was in her life. She thought for a second and she said, “My Son.” I was completely expecting her to say her mom or dad and Grandma’s, but Akira went on to explain. Akira told me that when she was young, she was rebellious and was out of control. She was headed for a life of trouble and disappointment and then she got pregnant and gave birth to her son Cyhro. She said from the moment she first saw him her life changed. She realized that she was at a crossroad and she needed to make a change for him. From that moment on she began making better decisions and working hard for a better life for him and for her.

Before you were conceived, I wanted you.
Before you were born, I loved you.
Before you were here an hour, I would die for you.
That’s the miracle of a Mother’s love.

Akira – You are a blessing not only to Cyhro but to all your residents at Meadow Grove and to Foundations. We are so lucky to have you as a Nursing Assistant and a Mentor to others. Keep making a difference and changing to World!
