They Just Shine

Left to Right: Santana Brown, Mona Colvin, Bob Speelman, Clarissa Lawing, Renea Schlabach

March 20, 2020
Baltic, Ohio - I went to Oak Pointe Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Baltic. If you don't know where Baltic is, it's in the heart of Ohio Amish Country. This building has a special place in my heart because it was one of the very first buildings that I was an administrator at with Foundations back in 2003.

When I went to the front entrance to get in, it was locked. There was a sign on the front door stating that only essential staff could enter, and the only entrance that could be used is the rear entrance where everyone entering would be screened.

The Coronavirus is having a challenging impact on the world, and hopefully, we will soon get a handle on it. Until then, we have to do everything within our power to protect our residents. All family visitation has been stopped, outside entertainers have been canceled, resident outings postponed. These measures at first blush seem drastic, but we have a responsibility to protect the most vulnerable to this Virus.

I was anxious to see how everyone's morale was given the circumstances. I was greeted by several employees that were there back when I was the administrator. Bev, the housekeeping and laundry supervisor, was one of the first people I saw. She was all smiles and said she and her team had been scrubbing and disinfecting everything in sight. That didn't surprise me because that is how they did things even before the Coronavirus situation.

I saw Cindy Richter, who also was an STNA at Oak Pointe forever. Everyone calls her Momma. She was all smiles as well. I made my way onto The Grove, which is the Memory Care Unit at Oak Pointe. I was there to work with Renea Schlabach but quickly saw that on the Grove, they were a team. Santana Brown was the nurse, and the other STNA was Clarissa Lawing. They were amazing with the residents and made sure everyone was entertained, comfortable, cared for, and fed.

After spending a few hours with Renea, Clarissa, and Santana, I made my way to the Behavioral Health Unit to spend some time with Mona Colvin. Mona has been an STNA since 1980. That's right, 40 years of caring for others. Mona is also called "Momma" by everyone on her unit. The unit was so calm and everyone was smiling, talking, and laughing. Mona's love for her residents has never changed. They are part of her family and she cares for them that way. She buys them things when they run out of money and she brings them things when she is out shopping that she knows they would like.

I left Oak Pointe so proud of our Care Team. If it wasn't for the sign on the front door and having to go through the screening in the rear entrance of the building, you would have never known the turmoil in the world right now. The residents were laughing and happy and well cared for. Our Culture of Care is alive and well and shining at Oak Pointe. Our Care Team is nothing short of amazing.

We are told to let our light shine, and if it does, we won't need to tell anybody it does. Lighthouses don't fire cannons to call attention to their shining- they just shine.
