Honoring Our Veterans

November 11, 2019

NOTE: This was taken from the blog of Foundations Health Solutions leader Bob Speelman. Each week Bob works at one of our Foundations Health facilities in different roles. Whether working in housekeeping or as a nursing assistant, he sees firsthand how we embody the vision of our founder and nursing home developer, Brian Colleran, to be "A Culture of Care."

Every one of our 57 facilities across the State honored our incredible veterans over the last few days. One facility, in particular, had an absolutely fantastic program that I had to attend. Lisa Hudson, the activities director at Admirals Pointe in Huron, pulled out all the stops and created an incredibly moving celebration and ceremony to honor their veterans.

The event began at 8:30 am with a breakfast buffet of biscuits and gravy that Lisa made herself and were to die for. The menu included scrambled eggs, bacon, French toast sticks, hash browns, orange juice, and coffee.

At 9:30, the ceremony began with some opening remarks from Lisa and Trisha Brown, the administrator. This was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Then a representative from Stein Hospice lead everyone in some patriotic songs and the theme song from each branch of service.

Following this, each veteran was called up and pined with a service recognition pin by Joshua Hudson, Petty Officer 1st Class, E6 (Lisa's son). Then Nate Mealy, chief legal counsel for the Ohio Department of Veterans Services, presented each veteran with a Certificate honoring their service. Lisa then presented each veteran with a plaque that had pictures and memorabilia personalized for each veteran.

There was an empty table set in honor of the veterans we have lost. The entire ceremony culminated in the release of two doves in honor of the veterans that fought and died for our country.

The entire event was beautiful, moving, and it was humbling to be in the presence of the great men and women that served and fought to defend our freedom and our way of life as Americans. We owe them so much.

"Never was so much owed by so many to so few."

Each week, Bob Speelman visits a Foundations Health Solutions nursing home. He works alongside a variety of departments to ensure Foundations Health is excelling in the vision of founder Brian Colleran's "Culture of Care." Foundations Health continues to practice the principles nursing home developer Brian Colleran instilled, such as resident and family satisfaction, positive employee culture, and investment in the community.
