It All Comes From The Heart

From L to R: Bob Speelman, Yashica Banks, Linda Parker, Joe Altieri

October 31, 2018
I spent the day at Canal Pointe Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, our 120 bed skilled nursing facility in Akron. I worked alongside Linda Parker, a 30-year veteran caregiver. At age 67, Linda has the love of a mother and the energy of a teenager. Linda first was exposed to caregiving when she began caring for her father and twin brother at home. When it got to be too much for Linda to do herself, both her father and twin brother were admitted to Canal Pointe. Linda became a nursing assistant and began working at Canal Pointe, caring for the residents with the team at the facility. After her father and twin brother passed, Linda continued on as an STNA at Canal Pointe. Linda said she wanted to provide the same loving care to others that she has been able to provide to her father and brother. Linda felt everyone deserved to have someone love and care for them, just like she was able to do for her family.

Being with Linda was an amazing experience. Never once did I feel like Linda was at work. She walked around the facility taking care of residents and helping others as if it was a higher calling. The love she delivered to each resident and the level of dignity she provided them was a truly amazing experience to witness.

As Linda entered a resident’s room, she immediately began chatting with the residents. The conversations she had with each one were loving and caring, as she would communicate clearly how she was about to assist them and then jump right back into their conversation.

One resident put it best when asked why Linda was such a good caregiver; not missing a beat she responded, “Her heart! It all comes from her heart.”

“Stand for something. Make your life mean something. Start where you are with what you have. You are enough.”

Thank you Linda for making a difference in the lives of our residents, and in my life!
