Dr. Simona Suchan Shares About Alzheimer's Awareness

November 30, 2021

Foundations Health Solutions has become the largest healthcare provider in the state of Ohio by providing the highest quality of care and best service possible to our communities. To provide this level of service, we know that we must find the right people to join our team. It is our goal to find dedicated individuals that are driven, do what is right, and work with each patient on their individualized needs. This includes the many physicians and doctors that work with our skilled nursing facilities. We partner with the best physicians across the state that bring years of experience with them. One of these exceptional physicians is Dr. Simona Suchan, M.D.

Meet Dr. Simona Suchan, M.D.:

Dr. Suchan is the Director of Geriatric Psychiatry at Summa Health’s St. Thomas Hospital and works with our nursing homes in the Akron area. Dr. Suchan began working with Foundations Health in 2020 and her insight has been incredibly beneficial to our teams.

As a Director of Geriatric Psychiatry, Dr. Suchan regularly works with elderly patients suffering from Alzheimer’s and other diseases that can lead to dementia or cognitive impairments. Dr. Suchan expresses, “I’ve enjoyed taking care of the elderly since medical school and geriatric psychiatry provided me with the opportunity to combine my interest in internal medicine and psychiatry.”

Alzheimer’s Awareness:

November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. This month of awareness was instated by late president Ronald Reagan who passed away in 2004 due to his own battle with the disease. Alzheimer’s is one of the leading causes of death in the United States and can be as much of a battle for the individual diagnosed as it can be for their family and loved ones. The biggest struggles family members face when caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s is the frustration and grieving that comes with the loss of the ‘person’ they used to know.

Dr. Suchan has been working with patients with Alzheimer’s for the past 32 years, since graduating medical school in 1989. When speaking to Dr. Suchan about the symptoms of Alzheimer’s that often surprise family members, she stated, “Personality changes. Sometimes in the opposite direction of previous behavior pattern.”

Though there is not currently a cure for Alzheimer’s, Dr. Suchan shares that a healthy lifestyle, proper diet, and exercise are increasingly recognized as valuable tools for prevention. “We can all apply the principles of a healthy lifestyle to decrease the burden of chronic disease at any age.”

Early Signs of Alzheimer’s:

  • Memory Loss
  • Disorientation
  • Problems with Abstract Thinking
  • Changes in mood and behavior
  • Loss of Initiative
  • Problems Performing Familiar Tasks
  • Problems with Judgment
  • Change in Personality

When is Additional Care Necessary?

“When someone develops memory loss, they should see their doctor to find out what is causing it. It is possible to make a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease with a high degree of certainty. If initial screening tests are positive, additional evaluation is warranted.”

Foundations Health Solutions Culture of Care:

At Foundations Health Solutions, we pride ourselves on being not only a provider of superior care but an exemplary employer. Our goal is to have the right people in the right places doing the right things for the right reasons. Dr. Suchan is one of those people. When asked what her favorite part of her job was, she responded, “Being part of a treatment team and working with patients and their families. It is a privilege, and I am humbled and grateful to have this opportunity.”
