A Little Better Each Day

My STNA journey took me to McNaughten Pointe, our 141-bed facility in Columbus, Ohio. Mike Fatica is the Administrator there and is doing an incredible job leading this facility. Mike had me working on McNaughten ventilator unit with three absolutely amazing STNA’s: Linda Jean, Daija Sullens and, Ritta Kimu. Linda is the veteran of the crew since she has been at McNaughten 11 years, but you’d think they all three had been working together that long because they worked incredibly well as a team.

After bathing and changing and dressing several residents and watching the three of them interacting with the residents, I began to get a little emotional. You see, many of the ventilator residents these three ladies cared for either could not communicate at all, or the communication was a subtle look or smile. Linda, Daija, and Ritta knew what the look or eye movement meant and could tell the mood of the resident as soon as they entered the room. For the ones who couldn’t communicate Linda, Daija and Ritta were so loving and kind and attentive to every little detail of their resident’s care.

I asked the ladies how they knew so much about the residents that couldn’t communicate, and they told me they read their medical history, gather information from the chart, and then when family members come in they get additional information about what the residents like and enjoy. It was essential to the team to know as much about their residents as possible to give the best possible care.

Daija told me she is going to school to be an EMT. She loves helping people and wants to make an impact in life. Ritta is going to Nursing School and loves the whole healthcare field. Linda loves being an STNA and working hands-on to care for her residents and is precisely where God wants her. These ladies are incredible. They are making a difference every day. Their love and compassion for their residents was a blessing to see and I felt privileged to have the opportunity to work alongside them.

"Make it a rule, and pray to God to help you to keep it, never, if possible, to lie down at night without being able to say, “I have made one human being at least a little wiser, or a little happier, or at least a little better this day.”
